Dogs are one of the animals that eat anything thus you should not be surprised if your Fido has decided to help you with the task of weeding the garden. Dogs have a rather amusing habit of eating grass. Dogs have a reputation for being indiscriminate eaters and eating grass would be much better than eating spoiled food and eating its own or other dog’s poop. However, a pet parent that ensures that the pet is given enough nutritious food would be puzzled by the dog’s predilection for grass. What interesting things can Fido see in the lawn enough to make the dog eat the grass?

Wolves are the progenitors of dogs and grass forms a part of a wolf’s diet. Wolves hunt and eat their prey but grasses, plants and berries are eaten as well when food is scarce. It was believed that wolves and also dogs in the wild have developed the habit to eat grass from eating the herbivores. Dogs in the wild would not know when the next meal would be thus the hunted prey as well as the contents of the stomach are totally consumed. Overtime, because of food scarcity, dogs in the wild have developed the habit of eating leaves and grasses.

Eating grass is believed to be the dog’s way correcting a dietary imbalance. Not only do dogs have big appetites, they are not choosy eaters as well.

It is not surprising for dogs to have upset stomachs if they have ingested something that was not accepted by the dog’s system. Nature have given dogs a one of a kind remedy for upset stomach. Simply by eating grass; the dog can purge the toxic substance from its body. Grass blades induces a dog to vomit the toxic substance from its stomach. Grass that is fully swallowed by the dog acts as a bowel cleanser that will remove intestinal parasites.
